Listen closely at the start of “The Paper Snake” and you can hear drummer José Medeles and guitarist Marisa Anderson breathing. This is no spit-shined performance, but rather an intimately recorded one. A searching moment from Medeles’ Railroad Cadences & Melancholic Anthems, a drum and guitar tribute to the musical spirit of the late guitarist and DIY iconoclast John Fahey, it bears testament to Anderson’s “sense of adventure and her unbelievable confidence,” Medeles says. “Her shocking musicality shines through.” Like the rest of the album, which finds Medeles paired with Anderson, Chris Funk of The Decemberists, and M. Ward, respectively, the coiling and Western inflection of “The Paper Snake” was entirely improvised. “It was vulnerable and honest,” Medeles says. “We set up, got sounds, and played.” The song contributes to a hot streak of collaboration from Anderson, whose recent work with William Tyler and Jim White (Dirty Three/Xylouris White) has found her in top form, transmuting the Delta blues through an enigmatic cosmic filter.
